The temperature inside the pycnometer chamber has previously been found to be 5 ±2 °C above ambient. Therefore the temperature of the test substance during measurement was 27 °C (± 2 K) and a correction was applied to calculate the density at 20 °C.

For solid organic compounds the cubic thermal expansion coefficient γ is in the range of

γ= 0.0002 K-1 - 0.0004 K-1 (D'Ans Lax, Taschenbuch für Chemiker und Physiker, Band I, 3.Aufl., 1967).

Using an average value of γ = 0.0003 K-1 the volume (V T ) measured at the temperature of the chamber TChis extrapolated to the volume (V 20° ) at 20 °C according to the formulae:

The density and relative density of the test item was determined according to OECD guideline no. 109 [adopted on 27 July 1995] and EU test method A.3 [Directive 92/69/EEC, Official Journal L 383 A 1992] with the gas displacement pycnometer.
