Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The study need not to be conducted as the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow < 3) and is readily biodegradable
The calculated Koc is for the charged molecule is 45.6 at pH 7 (OXEA, 2010).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX Nr 9.3.3, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance has a low potential for absorption (log Kow < 3, see Sect. 4.7) and is readily biodegradable (see Sect. 5.2.1).

As additional information, the Koc of butyric acid was estimated to be 45.6 at pH 7 (log Koc at pH 7: 1.66; pH 4: 1.69) using a method by Franco & Trapp (2008) for the estimation of the adsorption coefficient for the charged molecule

. The low Koc indicates high mobility in soil and low potential for absorption.

The results of Hemphill (1962) are not suited to assess the adsorption of butyric acid to soils. The sorbents are pure clay without carbon content and the publication has different weaknesses.
