In the GLP Klimisch 1 study from Aniol (2012) the toxicity of tin disulfide on algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) was tested in a limit test at the limit of water solubility which was determined for algal medium as 11 µg/L (analytical determination during the test). The test was performed according to OECD 201 and the validity criteria were met.

The test solution was prepared by direct addition of 30.0 mg of the Test Item to 3 L culture-medium (5 L glass beaker).The nominal test concentration of 10.0 mg/L was chosen for practical reasons, i.e. to ensure sufficient accuracy of the nominal concentration, which was prepared by direct addition of the test item into theglass beaker.This test solution was stirred at low speed for 24 h, filtered (cellulose nitrate filters, 0.1 µm pore size) and transferred into the test vessels thereafter. The test solution was clear.The control (culture-medium) was treated accordingly.

The test was started with 5000 cells/mL and was performed for 72 hours. During that time the algal density increased by a factor of 76. All validity criteria were met. No inhibition was observed. Hence, the test item has no effect on the growth of the test organism under the tested conditions.

The results of this test are considered relevant and reliable for the risk assessment.

The results are supported by tests on tin sulfide which resulted also in no effects at concentration up to the limit of water solubility.
