Description of key information

Skin (in vivo)
(S)-1 -Phenyl-propylamine (CAS 3789-59-1, read across) was highly corrosive after application on rabbit skin (OECD 404). [Calvert Preclinical Services, 2001]
Eye (ex vivo)
(S)-1 -Phenyl-propylamine (CAS 3789-59-1, read across) was irritating after application on rabbit eyes. [Calvert Preclinical Services, 2000]

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

Currently, there are no studies available regarding skin and eye irritation. Nevertheless, there are two reliable studies existing, which may serve as read across for each endpoint: (S)-1 -Phenyl-propylamine (CAS 3789-59-1).

Skin

The potential of (S)-1-Phenylpropylamine (CAS 3789-59-1, read across) to cause acute dermal irritation or corrosion was assessed in vivo in rabbits. The test substances caused full thickness necroses within an exposure time of 3 min. [Calvert Preclinical Services, 2001]

Eye

A study was performed to assess the ocular irritancy potential of (S)-1-Phenylpropylamine (CAS 3789-59-1, read across) in the rabbit following application onto the cornea of the enucleated eye. The rabbit enucleated eye test is used, as a first stage in the assessment of ocular irritancy potential. Based on the evaluation criteria defined for this test, the test substance was considered to have the potential to cause ocular irritancy in vivo. [Calvert Preclinical Services, 2000]

Respiratory system

Currently, there is no information available.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: highly corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data for (S)-1-Phenyl-propylamine (CAS 3789-59-1, read across), (R)-1-Phenyl-propylamine is subject to C&L:

Skin

according to Regulation 1272/2008/EC: highly corrosive to the skin and eyes: cat. 1A (H314)

according to Directive 67/548/EEC: causes severe burns: R35

Eye

In view of the results of the skin irritation test, the test substance is also considered as corrosive to the eye:

according to Regulation 1272/2008/EC: highly corrosive to the skin and eyes: cat. 1A (H314)

according to Directive 67/548/EEC: causes severe burns: R35

Respiratory system

No data available. The substance is corrosive
