Reference
Endpoint:
flash point of flammable liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Test dates: Apr.19 to Jul.5, 2013
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. The substance is adequately identified. Therefore full validation applies.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Not applicable
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
GIPC; effective Jun.14, 2012, signed on Jan.10, 2013
Type of method:
equilibrium method closed cup
Flash point apparatus:
Setaflash apparatus
Dynamic viscosity of test material:
No data
Key result
Flash point:
122 °C
Atm. press.:
ca. 1 atm

In a first experiment, the temperature was increased by successive steps of +10 °C, using 4 mL of sample, flashing occurred at 120 °C.

The procedure was reproduced using a new 4 mL sample, and the temperature was increased by successive steps of +2 °C: flashing occurred at 122 °C. Replicate tests showed that no flash was observed at 121 °C, but flashing occurred at 122 °C.

The mean flash point was determined to be 122 °C.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Remarks:
GHS and EU-CLP criteria not met
Conclusions:
The flash point of the test substance is above the classification thresholds of 60 °C (CLP criteria) and 93 °C (GHS criteria). Therefore, the test substance is NOT a flammable liquid according to CLP and GHS.
Executive summary:

The flash point of the test substance was determined under GLP according to EU A.9 guideline, using
an equilibrium closed cup method with Setaflash apparatus.

In a screening test, the flashing occurred at 120 °C with increase in temperature of +10 °C. Main test was performed with increase in temperature of +2 °C in which flashing occurred at 122 °C. Replicate tests showed that no flash was observed at 121 °C but occurred at 122 °C in every case.

The flash point of test item was determined to be 122 °C.

Description of key information

Flash Point = 122°C (atmP not specified)
(EU A9, equilibrium closed cup method; GLP)

The substance is NOT classified as a flammable liquid neither according to CLP Regulation criteria, nor to UN GHS.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
122 °C

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EU method and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key data.
This study is relevant for the classification regarding flammable properties. (see IU Section 4.13 endpoint summary for justification of non-classification)
