No data is available on the bioaccumulation potential of the substance, however, considering its LogPow (< 3) the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation and thus the study was not conducted.
For the chemical safety assessment though, since no data on the substance is available, data on the dissociation substances is used. Justification for Read Across is given in Section 13 of IUCLID.
The bioconcentration potential of perchlorate was evaluated according to OECD Guideline 305 and EPA OPP 165-4. Sixty Bluegill sunfish were exposed to the substance for 28 days in two concentrations (1.5 and 15 mg/l) and a control. After the exposure period the whole fish was homogenized and the perchlorate concentration found in the tissues was measured. Mean measured perchlorate concentrations were 0, 1.4, and 11.9 mg/l in water in the control and the low- and high-level exposures, respectively. Steady-state conditions were not reached, the BCF taken was the highest BCF. All fish were observed to be normal and healthy for the 28 -d duration of the test. Concentrations of perchlorate in fish tissue in the low treatment were not detected until day 21 but reached 1.1 mg/kg on day 21 and 1.5 mg/kg on day 28. In the high-level treatment, perchlorate concentrations in bluegill increased throughout the test, reaching 6.8 mg/kg on day 28. The BCF value for the low treatment was 0.73 l/kg and the BCF for the high treatment 0.68 l/kg for whole bluegill.BCF = 0.70 l/kg (whole body w.w, geometric mean measured)
The bioconcentration factor of triethanolamine was estimated by the model BCFBAF v3.01, Estimation Programs Interface Suite (EpiSuite 4.1), US EPA and was found equal to 3.162 l/kg wet-wt from regression-based method. By using the Arnot-Gobas method (upper trophic) a BCF of 0.8949 was calculated.
Based on the bioaccumulation potential of the two dissociation substances the substance is not expected to biaccumulate. Furthermore, based on the characteristics of the substance (logPow<4), there is no potential for bioaccumulation.
For the chemical safety assessment the bioconcentration factor for perchlorate is used since it is determined by an experimental study in contrast with triethanolamine BCF value which is calculated by the BCFBAF model.
