No toxic effects to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility (OECD 201, S. capricornutum); read-across

There is no study available investigating the toxicity of Tetraesters of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol and decanoic and octanoic acid (CAS 68441-68-9) to aquatic algae. Therefore, read-across to the structurally related source substance Fatty acids, C8-10. mixed esters with dipenaterythritol, isooctanoic acid, pentaerythritol and tripentaerythritol (CAS 189200-42-8) was conducted in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5. Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substance, the source substance are considered suitable representatives for the assessment of the toxicity of the target substance to aquatic algae. The read-across approach is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID section 13.
The available study was conducted according to OECD 201 and GLP. In a static test, S. capricornutum was exposed to water accommodated fractions (WAFs) with nominal loading rates of 1000, 500, 250, 125 and 62.5 mg/L for 72 h. Test item concentrations were analytically verified by TOC in the 1000 mg/L treatment at the beginning (0 h) and at the end of the test (96 h).
The measured TOC in the WAF was 6.7 mg/L at 0 h and 4.2 mg/L after 4 h, which was in the same order of magnitude as the control with 5.4 mg/L at 0 h and 5.5 mg/L after 4 h, thus confirming the low solubility of the substance.
After 72 h of exposure no effects on the growth rate of the algae were observed and the derived effect concentrations are an EL50 (72 h) > 1000 mg/L (nominal) and a NOELR (72 h) ≥ 1000 mg/L. Thus, no effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L) were observed.
Based on the available result from the structurally related source substance (in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5), it can be concluded that Tetraesters of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol and decanoic and octanoic acid (CAS 68441-68-9) will not cause toxic effects to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility.
