Endpoint:
boiling point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 103 (Boiling point/boiling range)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Type of method:
ebulliometer
Key result
Boiling pt.:
> 314 °C
Atm. press.:
ca. 101.3 kPa
Decomposition:
no

- The observed duplicate boiling points of the reference material were 245 and 244 °C for an average of 245 ± 1 °C at 101.3 kPa.  This compared to the reported boiling point of 248 °C at 101.3 kPa, indicating an average deviation/bias of 3 °C.

- The duplicate test material warming curves did not show a distinct boiling plateau up to the maximum temperature of 311 °C.  This was supported by the fact that test material was not observed to boil during the test.  No test material colour change was observed during the test.  Therefore, the bias-corrected boiling point of the test material was greater than 314 °C at 101.3 kPa.  Boiling point measurement at reduced pressure was not performed because the calculated boiling point at atmospheric pressure was greater than 300 °C, which is the regulatory limit set by the US EPA (EPA, 1999) and Environment Canadian (CEPA, 1993).

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study the bias-corrected boiling point of the test material was greater than 314 °C at 101.3 kPa. No colour change was observed during the test.

Additional information

The boiling point of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline OECD 103 under GLP conditions. The study was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the criteria set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

The observed duplicate boiling points of the reference material were 245 and 244 °C for an average of 245 ± 1 °C at 101.3 kPa.  This compared to the reported boiling point of 248 °C at 101.3 kPa, indicating an average deviation/bias of 3 °C. The duplicate test material warming curves did not show a distinct boiling plateau up to the maximum temperature of 311 °C.

Under the conditions of this study the bias-corrected boiling point of the test material was greater than 314 °C at 101.3 kPa. No colour change was observed during the test.
