Key result
Surface tension:
29.58 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
90 vol%
Remarks on result:
other: Harkins-Jordan corrected result for a 90 % saturated solution in double-distilled water

The torsiometer was calibrated using double-distilled water, the calibration factor was 0.9966.

An unfiltered sample from the last time point of the water solubility test was diluted to 90 % saturation with double-distilled water. The surface tension test was performed at 20 °C and testing started 10 minutes after sample preparation. Five measurements were taken at 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 minutes and gave a surface tension of 32.5mN/m at each time point. The corrected mean was 32.39 mN/m. The surface tension was < 60 mN/m, therefore it was considered surface active and the Harkins-Jordan was applied.

The Harkins-Jordan corrected result for a 90 % saturated solution in double-distilled water was 29.58 mN/m.

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the study, the surface tension of the test material was 29.58 mN/m corrected for Harkins Jordan at 20 °C on a 90 % saturated solution.
Executive summary:

The surafce tension of the test material was investigated in a study which was performed under GLP conditions and in accordance with the standardised guideline OECD 115.

The apparatus, a White Instruments Surface Tension (torsion) Balance, employing the harmonised ring method was calibrated using double-distilled water and the calibration factor was determined to be 0.9966. Following calibration, a solution of test substance was prepared in double-distilled water at 90 % saturation from one of the water solubility tests, and its surface tension measured by the harmonised ring method. An unfiltered sample from the last time point of the water solubility test was diluted to 90% saturation with double-distilled water.
