Endpoint:
viscosity
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2011-05-23
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The viscosity is measured by a Ubbelohde viscometer which is one version of a glass capillary viscometer, where the liquid examined has to be of a known density. It consisits of a U-shaped glass tube held vertically in a controlled temperature bath (20°C). In one arm of the U is a vertical section of precise narrow bore (the capillary). Above this is a bulb, with it is another bulb lower down on the other arm. In use, liquid is drawn into the upper bulb by suction (15 mL) and after the viscometer is left for 30 minutes to regulate its temperature to 20°C the liquid examied is allowed to flow down through the capillary into the lower bulb. Two marks (one above and one below the upper bulb) indicate a known volume. The time taken for the level of the liquid to pass between these marks is proportional to the kinematic viscosity. Most commercial units are provided with a conversion factor, or can be calibrated by a fluid of known properties.
The time required for the test liquid to flow through a capillary of a known diameter of a certain factor between two marked points is measured. By multiplying the time taken by the factor of the viscometer, the kinematic viscosity is obtained.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
capillary viscometer (static)
Temp.:
20°C
Parameter:
dynamic viscosity (in mPa s)
Value:
6.3

The following time results were obtained in three individual measurements:

measurement 1 - 221.52 s

measurement 2 - 221.35 s

measurement 3 - 221.44 s

For the viscosity calculation the average time was considered.

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the study the obtained viscosity for TBPND was 6.30 mPas at 20°C.
Executive summary:

The viscosity (dynamic viscosity) of the test susbstance tert-Butylperoxyneodecanoat (TBPND) was examined by an Ubbelohde viscometer in three separate measurements at 20 °C. An average of the time measured (the time taken for the liquid to pass between two marked points) was considered for the viscosity calculation. Thus, the viscosity result obtained for TBPND was 6.3 mPas.

Description of key information

Under the conditions of the study the obtained viscosity for TBPND (at 20°C )was 6.30mPas.
