Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A bioaccumulation study is technically not feasible according to REACH Annex XI, point 2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

OECD test guideline 305 on bioaccumulation in fish is applicable to chemical substances for which it is possible to generate stable solutions in water. Graphite, however, is completely insoluble in water (see IUCLID section 4.8), which is established textbook knowledge. Therefore, stable solutions of the substance in water are impossible to maintain. In view of its insolubility, there is even no bioaccumulation potential of graphite under realistic natural conditions. Neither would a bioaccumulation study employing dietary exposure be feasible or useful since graphite is an inert material that, based on its layered, planar structure forming large macromolecules, can safely be expected to be devoid of any potential to cross biological membranes. In conclusion, due to the physicochemical and structural properties of graphite, performing a bioaccumulation study in fish is technically not feasible, fulfilling the criteria of REACH Annex XI, point 2.
