Additional information

Short term toxicity of p-cresol towards two species of aquatic invertebrates was assessed in several experiments.

The acute toxicity of p-cresol to Daphnia pulicaria was determined in an experiment under fow-through conditions. After an exposure period of 24 h the LC50 was reported to be 22.7 mg/l. The result relates to measured concentration as analytical control was performed.

Daphnia magna was exposed to p-cresol in a study conducted in accordance with the national standard method on toxicity to aquatic invertebrates DIN 38412, part 11. An EC50 of 7.7 mg/l was determined after 48 hours of exposure.

Another aquatic invertebrate was tested for toxicity. Freshly fertilized eggs of the marine sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis were exposed to m-cresol in a static test. The EC50 (96 h) was 5 mg/L.

For risk assessment purposes, only the most reliable study is considered. Studies conducted with Daphnia sp. were chosen for assessment, as it is the preferred species and the experiments were carried out according to guideline, following the state-of-the-art.
