Description of key information

No effects of C.I. Pigment Yellow 53 on Pseudomonas putida in the oxygen consumption test (EC10 5680 mg/L).
For Ni, a 30 min EC50 of 33 mg Ni/L (Cokgor et al 2007) was derived. Therefore, depending on local conditions, disturbance in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One single species respiration inhibition study is available. The study with C.I. Pigment Yellow 53 as test substance was performed according to DIN 38412 Part 27 (draft). The test substance proved to be not toxic to Pseudomonas putida in the range of its water solubility. The EC10 (30 min) is 5680 mg/L. It is assumed that the result is identical to C.I. Pigment Green 50.

Several publications assessing the effects of nickel on ciliated protozoa (preferablyT. pyriformis) and respiration/nitrification using bacteria originating from sewage treatment plants are available. The key publication selected for Ni-PNEC STP derivation is Cokgor et al (2007). No other PNEC relevant studies that investigated the effects of Ni on bacterial populations were identified. However, the other studies in the database not deemed directly relevant, supported the relevancy and the conservative nature of an EC50of 33 mg/L.
