Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short description of key information on bioaccumulation potential result:

Absorption: Rapid by oral route.  May be absorbed through the skin. Absorbed and rapidly metabolized by olfactory epithelial cells upon inhalation.

Distribution: Limited to blood flow and aqueous compartments.

Metabolism: Expected metabolites include methanol, monomethyl glutarate, and glutaric acid

Excretion: Metabolites expected to be excreted primarily in urine.

Short description of key information on absorption rate:

Dermal Absorption Rate (Estimated): 2.77e-002 mg/cm2-hr.

Permability Coefficient (kp)(Estimated): 4.19e-004 cm/hr.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Bioaccumulation potential:
no bioaccumulation potential

Additional information

The toxicokinetics of Dimethyl glutarate (DMG, CAS # 1119-40-0) has not been derived experimentally. DMG is expected to be rapidly absorbed into the blood stream following oral exposure, has the potential to be absorbed through the skin, and is expected to be rapidly metabolized, including by olfactory epithelial cells, to methanol, monomethyl glutarate, and glutaric acid. Excretion of DMG's metabolites is expected to be primarily in urine (INVISTA, 2011). Using U.S. EPA DERMWIN v2.01, the dermal absorption rate of dimethyl glutarate is estimated to be 2.77e-002 mg/cm2 -hr with a permability coefficient of 4.19e-004 cm/hr). No measured data for dermal absoprtion were available.

Discussion on bioaccumulation potential result:

The toxicokinetics of Dimethyl glutarate (DMG, CAS # 1119-40-0) has not been derived experimentally. However, as an alternative to testing, the information on absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of DMG has been predicted by examining DMG¿s chemical and physical properties and available toxicological data, in combination with known biochemical processes.
