In an OECD 301B valid study (Hydrotox GmbH, 2011a), the degradation extent of the test material (alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde; CAS# 101-39-3) was 97.0% within 28 days after acidification (mean of three replicates). On day 4 the mean degradation extent of the test material was 2.6% and reached 77.4% by day 11. Therefore the test material (alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde) reached the pass level for ready biodegradability (60% ThCO2 and 10-day window).

Additionally, in a supporting Closed Bottle Biodegradability Test conducted according to Council Directive 92/69 EEC, Method C.4-E (Bayer, 1999a), within the test period of 28 days, a degradation rate of 63% was determined for Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha (CAS# 101-39-3). Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha is therefore classified as "Readily Biodegradable".

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, no simulation tests in water and sediment, or soil are required since alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
