Description of key information
Physico-chemical properties of registered substance were determined from experimental testing when possible. Some endpoints were waived, based on chemical structure of known constituents of the substance or considering experience in handling, testing and use of the substance.
We also considered waiving based on the technical issues due to the complex nature of such UVCB substance especially when the information obtained from testing was not relevant or of practical use and irrelevant for subsequent assessments.
The substance is NOT classified as hazardous with regard to physical hazards (flammability, explosivity, oxidising properties, self-heating) based on Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and GHS
Additional information
Summary of relevant physico-chemical properties:
Endpoint (method) |
Data |
Appearance at 20 °C and 1 atm. (visual) |
off-white powder |
Melting/Freezing point (OECD 102/EU A1, Capillary method and DSC method) |
(122.2 - 127.2 °C) under potential decomposition at about 99.1°C. Note that the test item was flowable only at 185 °C, which can be due to the viscosity of the substance. |
Boiling point (OECD 103/EU A2, Siwoloboff method and DSC method) |
205.5 °C (between 100.256 and 100.276 kPa) under potential decomposition from 95°C. |
Relative density (OECD 109/EU A3, pycnometer method with repl. liq.) |
1.1483 ± 0.0004 g/cm3 at 20.0 ± 0.2 °C D20/4 = 1.1483 |
Granulometry (OECD110/ISO13320/OCSPP 830.7520) |
D50 = 9.4 µm. It contains 30.7%vol of particles < 4 µm (respirable fraction), 51.5%vol of particles < 10 µm (thoracic fraction) and 92.5%vol of particles < 100 µm (inhalable fraction). |
Vapour pressure (OECD 104/EU A4, static method) |
The vapour pressure of the test substance has been determined to be 868 Pa at 20 °C and 1214 Pa at 25°C (interpolation). Note that the result obtained on this kind of substance should be largely influence by small amounts of volatile constituents and these values may not represent the major part of the substance. Therefore the result should be considered with caution when used for subsequent assessment (worst case). |
log Kow (OECD 117) |
The log POWof the components of Boswellia serrata extract is strongly pH dependent: At pH 5 the major part (86.31 % rel. areas) of the components has log POWvalues > 4, while at pH 8 the major part (96.64 % rel. areas) has log POWvalues < 0.3. |
Water solubility (data waiving) |
Waived considering the very complex nature of the test item, the information obtained from testing is considered as not relevant or of practical use for subsequent assessments |
Surface tension (OECD115/EU A.5, plate method) |
67.33 mN/m at 20.4 °C (mean of two determinations obtained from two 90% saturated solutions prepared with a loading rate of 1g/L of test item and two shaking times to saturate the solution of 72h and 7 days respectively). Concentration of test solutions : 14.70 - 49.32 mg of test item/L (estimated based on analysis of dissolved organic carbon in the test solutions). As the result is above the threshold value of 60mN/m, the substance is considered to have NO surface active potential under the experimental conditions based on EUA5 criteria. |
Auto-Flammability (data waiving) |
Self-ignition temperature : waived considering MP < 160°C |
Flash-point (EU A9)
Flammability (N.1 readily combustible solids)
Flammability water&air (data waiving)
Self-heating substances/mixtures (data waiving) |
Waived considering physical state of the substance (solid)
No ignition is observed when the substance is heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes. NOT flammable solid (for CLP and UN regulations). Waived based on experience in handling, testing and use and chemical structure of known constituents of the substance. NOT flammable if contact with air or water Waived based on the physical state (solid with a low melting point < 160°C) NO self-heating substance anticipated. |
Explosive properties (data waiving) |
Waived based on experience in handling and use of the substance and chemical structure of known constituents. LOW potential for explosive properties |
Oxidising properties (data waiving) |
Waived based on chemical structure of known constituents of the substance. LOW potential for oxidizing properties |
Slight variations are possible with composition (UVCB substance).
