Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
Substances obtianed form the recovering process of used lubricating oils.
Category description:
(1) EC 274-635-9 (Lubricating oils, used), (2) EC 295-421-1 (Lubricating oils, used, distd.), (3) EC 269-822-7 (Fuels, diesel) (4) EC 295-422-7 (Lubricating oils, used, vacuum distd.), (5) EC 265-161-3 (Lubricating oils (petroleum), hydrotreated spent).
Category rationale:
The category was built up considering the whole technical process for used oil recovering, where the target substance ("Lubricating oils, used, distd."- EC 295-421-1) is included.
The substance "lubricating oil, used" - EC 274-635-9 (which is the starting material- Source 1) was considered at one side of the category and is physically separated by distillation into two substances: the target substance (the low fraction) and "Lubricating oils, used, vacuum distd." - EC 295-422-7 (the heavy fraction- Source 2).
From those two substances, "Lubricating oils (petroleum), hydrotreated spent" - EC 265-161-3 (Source 3) and “Fuels, diesel” – EC 269-822-7 (Source 4) are finally obtained.
Therefore, target substance and "Lubricating oils, used, vacuum distd." (EC 295-422-7) are included in the process as intermediate steps as described in attached scheme.
The process pathway going from the used oil to the refined oil and fuels diesel includes some steps suitable to eliminate contaminants and impurities. Therefore, "lubricating oil, used" (EC 274-635-9) was considered to be the worst case in the category.
When similar results were observed for the members at the opposite sides of the category, the information was interpolated to the target substance.
In the other cases (i.e. conflicting results) a conservative approach was case-by-case applied to conclude on the target substance.
Details on the conclusion for each endpoint are report in the Study record in the field Justification for type of information.
