Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

When release in water compartment

Due to its low octanol-water partition coefficient (log P=0.57) 1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea (DETU) is not expected to adsorb to sediment and will mainly be present in the aqueous phase. No specific study was performed to assess the hydrolysis of 1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea but it's well recognised that thioureas are stable in aqueous medium. This is confirmed by the hydrolysis data from analogous thioureas that are presented under a read-across approach.1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea is thus not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment. Furthermore, 1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea was shown to be not biodegradable with a ready biodegradability test.

When release in soil and sediment compartments

Due to a low log Kow, the substance should be characterised by a low potential of adsorption. This is supported with an estimated Koc value of 38.85 L/kg (Epiwin software). As a consequence, DETU will not persist in soil and sediment compartment because it will not adsorb on soil and sediment particules.

Bioaccumation potential

The partition coefficient of DETU was assessed by shake-flask method: log P = 0.57. This value indicates that DETU is characterised by a low potential of bioaccumulation.
