- Executive summary:
A study was performed to determine the surface tension of the test item N,N-dimethyl dodec-9-enamide. The method followed was designed to be compliant with the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 115, "Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions" and the Method A.5 of Commission Regulation No. 440/2008, “Surface Tension”.
In this method, the surface tension of the test item was determined at 21.0°C using a Du Noüy ring.
As the water solubility of the test item is 117.5 ± 1.4 mg/L, three solutions were prepared at a loading rate of 105.8 mg/L (90% of the solubility value) in ultra-pure water. The surface tension was then determined from five consecutive measurements with a deviation ≤ 0.1 mN/m from the mean. Two determinations were conducted.
The surface tension of N,N-dimethyl dodec-9-enamide was determined to be 29.9 mN/m at 21.0°C.
Reference
The surface tension of the reference substance methanol was measured before the first test item determination. A surface tension of 22.6 mN/m was registered and complies with the validation criteria of 22.5 +/- 0.2 mN/m.
The surface tension of the reference substance butanol-1 was measured after the second test item determination. A surface tension of 24.2 mN/m was registered and complies with the validation criteria of 24.3 +/- 0.2 mN/m.
First Determination:
The temperature was 21.0°C from the beginning of the determination to the end of the determination. The temperature during the determination did not vary by more than 0.5°C.
The time elapsed between the preparation of the solution (first solution) and its transfer to the beaker is 1 minute and 38 seconds.
The following surface tension values were obtained:

Second Determination:
The temperature was 21.0°C from the beginning of the determination to the end of the determination. The temperature during the determination did not vary by more than 0.5°C.
The time elapsed between the preparation of the solution (second solution) and its transfer to the beaker is 1 minute and 24 seconds.
The following surface tension values were obtained:

As the mean surface tensions obtained with trials 1 and 2 do not differ by more than 0.5 mN/m, no additional trial is needed.
Results are considered valid as the following conditions were satisfied:
- The temperature did not vary by more than 0.5°C throughout the determinations.
- The surface tension obtained with the two determinations did not differ by more than 0.5 mN/m.
- The surface tensions obtained for the methanol and the Butanol-1 are included in the control chart limits
Description of key information
The surface tension of the test item was determined to be 29.9 mN/m at 21.0°C in a study performed to OECD TG 115 and EU Method A.5 using the Du Noüy Ring Method.
