Description of key information
In a 72 hour acute toxicity test, Daphnia carinata were exposed to superphosphate at two different room temperatures. The LC50 values were estimated as:
LC50 (22.7°C): 1790 mg/l
LC50 (30.8°C): 1825 mg/l
Read across justification:
Since magnesium ammonium phosphate dissociates to it's respective ammonium, (magnesium) and phosphate ions, it is considered acceptable to approach the assessment of magnesium ammonium phosphate based on the individual components.
The cations are ubiquitos present in the environment and it is therefore justifiable not to assess the ecotoxicological behaviour of these cations. As a consequence the phosphate ion was considered to be the decisive parameter for the ecotoxicity of the substance.
As superphosphate is very soluble in water the LC50 for acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is considered as worst case assumption.
