Principles of method if other than guideline:
The current method is The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 314.2, which was specifically developed for the determination of perchlorate in high ionic strength samples using a two-dimensional (2D) IC system. This method is also described in Thermo Scientific™ Application Note (AN) 178.

Study design

Details on sampling:
Perchlorate ion content is measured in sites’ releases (both at manufacture site and main industrial user site in continental Europe) and surface water at typical concentrations between µg/L and mg/L.

a) Manufacture site
• Releases sampling
There is no intended release from the process. Sampling has been performed monthly at two residual releases points as well as flow rate measurements for several years.
• Surface water (river) sampling
Sampling is performed on a monthly basis in the river after the mixing zone. There is no identified source of perchlorate before the site’s release.
The flow rate of the river is also monitored.

b) Main industrial user site in continental Europe
• Release sampling
Sampling is performed after on-site treatment of wastewater (the acclimated biological treatment is working continuously). Sampling is continuous and correlated with release’s flow rate, so that monitoring perchlorate concentration allows getting the daily emission flow.
Values for perchlorate concentration in release and daily emission flow have been available since March 2014.
• Surface water (river) sampling
Sampling is performed on a weekly basis in the river after the mixing zone. There is no identified source of perchlorate before the site’s release.
The flow rate of the river is also monitored.

Results and discussion

Performance of the method:

  • Linearity: Correlation coefficient for calibration is superior to 99.98%
  • Reproducibility: 11 samples from an aqueous solution with a targeted concentration of 1 µg/L gave a Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) < 5%.
  • Specificity: Perchlorate is not detected in blank samples. Measured concentration in blank samples is below the limit of detection (0.3 ppb).
  • Accuracy: On 10 standard reference samples analysed after a 10 analysis series, the result of analysis is obtained with a rate of (100.5 +/- 1.0) %.
  • Limit of detection and limit of quantitation: Limit of detection (LOD) is estimated at 0.3 µg/L. If the measured value is below LOD, the result is considered to be 0 µg/L. Limit of quantification (LOQ) is estimated at 1 µg/L by statistics. If the measured value is below LOQ, the result is considered to be LOQ/2 = 0.5 µg/L.

Monitoring was performed both at manufacture site and main industrial user site in continental Europe. Several parameters were monitored:

Concentrations of Perchlorate ion in water were measured by Ion chromatography according to (EPA)Method 314.2.

-          River flow rate, 10thpercentile : 4.13E+ 6 m3/day

-          Quantity of Perchlorate ion released, 90thpercentile : 0.196 kg/day

-          Concentration of Perchlorate ion in the river, 90thpercentile : 1.5 µg/L

 

Main industrial user site:

-          Release flow rate, 90thpercentile : 142.5 m3/day

-          River flow rate, 10thpercentile : 5.52E+ 5 m3/day

-          Quantity of Perchlorate ion released, 90thpercentile : 0.029 kg/day

-          Concentration of Perchlorate ion in the river, 90thpercentile : 27 µg/L
