Description of key information

LC50(14d) > 12000 mg/kg (nominal) for mortality of Leptocheirus plumulosus (EPA-821-R-11-004, read across)

For the test substance itself, no sediment toxicity test is available. A suitable 10-day marine sediment toxicity study with the read across substance diisooctyl adipates  was located and is used to adequately cover this endpoint. The time frame of 10 days should be sufficient as DITA is readily biodegradable. The 10 -day LC50 for sediment toxicity is greater than the highest concentration tested (12000 mg/kg (dry)).

Additional information

A 10-day sediment test was performed on the read-across substance diisooctyl adipate, CAS 1330-86-5, with the amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus, following EPA-821-R-11-004 (consistent with ASTM Standard Guide E 1367 Standard Test method for measuring the toxicity of sediment-associated contaminants with marine and estuarine invertebrates). The test was not conducted according to the principles of GLP. However, per guidance, it was run concurrent with a reference toxicant test which met the acceptability criteria. There were no analytical measurements performed; however, loading rates tested were well above the standard 1000 mg/kg limit specified in the Lumbriculus toxicity tests and other test guidelines. Natural sediment was spiked with 1330, 4000, and 12000 mg/kg, and allowed to equilibrate (in a beaker sealed with durafilm) at temperature (20 +/- 1 °C) for 4 days prior to distributing it to test chambers and exposing the organisms. The 10 -day LC50 is greater than the highest concentration tested (12000 mg/kg dw).
