Five isomers of ditolyl ether (2,3' -, 2,4' -, 3,3' -, 3,4' -, and 4,4' -DTE) do not fulfill the definitve criteria of a persistent (P) or very persistent (vP) substance based on the findings of the OECD 309 guideline study with DT50 values below 40 days at 12°C. One isomer (2,2' -DTE), which is an impurity, however shows a DT50 of 63 days (geometric mean of 2 results) at 12°C leading to the conclusion as vP. Based on read across and weight of evidence the five isomers do not fulfill the criteria of a bioaccumulative substance (B, vB). The bioaccumulation behaviour of the 2,2'-isomer will be determined in a follow-up OECD 305 test. Finally, based on the available studies on acute and chronic toxicity to the environment as well as on human health it does not fulfill the criteria of a toxic substance (T).

In conclusion, ditolyl ether currently does not fulfill the criteria as a PBT or vPvB substance.
