MMVF note Q fibres are biosoluble mineral fibres, which fulfill one of the note Q criteria in Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (the CLP Regulation). Mineral wool fibres were recently declassified from irritant to non-irritant, cf. 1st ATP of the CLP regulation (Regulation (EC) 790/2009).
MMVF note Q fibres are assessed to cause dermal, eye and respiratory irritation (local effects) due to transient mechanical effects (e.g on skin like itching) of coarse fibres (diameter larger than 5 -6 µm) in the case of dermal effects; and due to foreign body effect in the case of eye and respiratory irritation. Thus, these irritative effects are mechanical and not chemical. For this reason MMVF fibres were declassified from irritant to non-irritant, cf. 1st ATP to the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) 790/2009). Consequently, no DNEL is developed for MMVF note Q fibres for dermal, eye and respiratory irritative effects after short-term and long-term exposure.
MMVF note Q fibres are assessed not to cause systemic effects after short-term or long-term exposure at any exposure route. Consequently, no DN(M)EL is developed for systemic effects after short-term and long-term exposure.
Long-term inhalation of MMVF note Q fibres (carcinogenicity studies) did not induce tumour development in the lungs or in pleura.
