Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash immediately with water for at least five minutes, seek
medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with water.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention, treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Combustion products may contain carbon oxides and silica
soot. Suitable extinguishing agents are water, carbon
dioxide, dry powder and foam.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Contain spillage. Soak up with a suitable absorbent. Gather
into containers for disposal by incineration. Flush area
with a large volume of water.

Handling and storage

Handling: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear impervious gloves
(e.g. PVC).

Storage: Keep containers tightly closed. Store under nitrogen gas.
Store away from oxidising agents.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: The substance rapidly hydrolyses to yield silicates and
glycols. Storage in air results in oxidative reactions. The
reaction products have been shown to cause chromosomal
damage in in-vitro tests.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance itself is not currently recovered. After
incorporation in brake fluid formulations recovery is
considered to be only a remote possibility in the light of
current experience with related products. Furthermore,
brake fluids containing the substance are hygroscopic and
the hydrolysed substance has no known use.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance itself has no known harmful effects; it is
readily hydrolysed in water.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: The substance is readily miscible with water and hydrolyses
rapidly. Discharge of the substance following dilution, to
sewer systems is possible. Disposal of small amounts of
spilt material at a landfill site is possible.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance can be incinerated in a facility designed for
industrial waste.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance is inherently biodegradable in an activated
sludge plant. It does not have any inhibitory effect on
activated sludge microorganisms and is not bioaccumulative.
Adsorption is unlikely to occur.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The public at large will only use formulations containing
the substance. Recovery from formulations is not possible.

Public at large - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance itself has no known harmful effects; it is
readily hydrolysed in water.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: In the UK, the waste formulations, at garages, will be
disposed of by adding to containers holding used engine oil
and, hence, disposal of in the same manner.
