Description of key information

Red organic powder. The substance decomposes before melt/boil; it is very water soluble and has a negative log Kow.

Based on the available information, it is not characterized by physical hazard(s).

Additional information

APPEARANCE AND STATE

Reactive Red 147 is a red organic powder at 20 °C and 1013 hPa.

The thermal behaviour of the substance was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry method, according to the OECD guidelines 102 and 113. Before the test the appearance of test item was red powder; after the experiments the test item became black powder in the crucible.

During the heating the test item showed endothermic signal in the temperature range of approx. 95 - 160 °C that can be associated with the water evaporation of the test item. Between 271 - 424 °C a consecutive continuous exothermic peak could be observed, which was assumed to the decomposition of the test item.

Based on the thermal behavious, the vapour pressure can be estimated as negligible.

The substance is characterized by a relative density of 1.52 at 20 °C.

SOLUBILITY and PARTITION COEFFICIENT

The water solubility was determined by flask method and the substance was measured using a validated analytical HPLC-UV method.

The water solubility ofthe test item was determined to be 144.59 ± 9.05 g/l (95 % confidence interval) at 20 ± 0.5 °C and pH 7.6 -7.7; the repeatability of the determination was < 15 % and thus within the range required by the guidelines.

The partition coefficient (Pow) was determined to be 0.0021 (calculated with extrapolated concentration values) using shake-flask method; the log Pow is -2.74. The partition coefficient (Pow) and log Pow calculated with the quantification limit of the method as the concentration of the test item in n-Octanol phase was 0.0036, and the log Pow is -2.46.

PHYSICAL HAZARDS

Reactive Red 147 di not self-ignite up to 400 °C during the specific test; thus, no self-ignition temperature could be stated.

The flammability potential of test item was investigated by preliminary test. Under the experimental conditions, the substance could not be ignited, thus no further investigation was performed.

Therefore, it has not to be classified as readily combustible solid in class 4.1 according to the UN Transport Regulation.

Regarding the explosiveness, screening procedure failed to evidence any reason for concern on the basis of the substance thermal behaviour. In addition, on the basis of its chemical structure, the substance is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials.

Therefore, no physical hazard(s) was identified.
