First-aid measures
Inhalation :
- Move the person away from the contaminated area. Make the affected person rest.
- Obtain medical attention.Show this sheet to the doctor.
Skin contact :
- Remove all contaminated clothing and footwear.
- Wash immediately and thoroughly for a prolonged period (at least 15 minutes).
- In case of inflammation (redness, irritation, ...) obtain medical attention.
- Show this sheet to the doctor.
- Use appropriate protective equipment when treating a contaminated person.
Eye contact :
- Immediately rinse with plenty of running water for a prolonged period, (at least 15 minutes) whilst keeping the eyes wide open
- Always obtain medical advice immediately, even if there are no symptoms.
- Show this sheet to the doctor.
Ingestion :
- NEVER attempt to induce vomiting. Do not give anything to drink.
- Always obtain medical attention immediately.
- Show this sheet to the doctor.
Protection of first-aiders :
- appropriate gloves.
- goggles.
- protective clothing (no turned-up sleeves).
Further information :
- Use appropriate protective equipment when treating a contaminated person. Place contaminated clothing in a sealed bag for disposal.
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishing media
- Suitable : Preferably use: Water
- Not suitable : None. If there is a fire close by, use suitable extinguishing agents
Specific hazards :
- Highly toxic gases are released. (Nitrogen oxides).
Protection of fire-fighters :
- Boots, gloves, goggles.Self-contained breathing apparatus.
For further information refer to paragraph "Exposure controls/personal protection".
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions :
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
- Do NOT attempt to take action WITHOUT suitable protective equipment.
- Personal protective equipment: Safety spectacles, goggles, long face shield, suitable protective clothing, appropriate gloves, self-contained breathing apparatus. For further information refer toparagraph "Exposure-controls/personal protection".
Environmental precautions :
- Contain the spilled material by bunding
- Methods for cleaning up : Recovery : Collect up the product and place it in a spare container, suitably labelled, made of plastic
- Methods for cleaning up : Cleaning/Decontamination : Wash with sodium carbonate solution (5% Na2 CO3).
Handling and storage
HANDLING
- Technical measures : Does not require any specific or particular measures.
- Measures : Do NOT handle without gloves.
- Safe handling advice : Only use in well-ventilated areas.
STORAGE
- Technical measures : The floor of the depot should be impermeable, treated against acid and designed to form a water-tight basin.
- Recommended Storage conditions : Store away from heat and away from incompatible materials.
- Incompatible products : Alkalis and caustic products. Reducing materials.
- Packaging : Product must only be kept in the supplier's packaging.
- Recommended Packaging materials : Plastic materials
- Not suitable Packaging materials : Any other packaging. Materials other than those recommended.
- Further information : Very corrosive to metals. Hydrogen is released which forms an explosive mixture in air.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Engineering measures : Ensure good ventilation of the work station.
Control parameters
Exposure limit values (Human Health)
- Occupational exposure limit values (France) : Nitric acid : VLE: 2.6 mg/m3
- ACGIH Threshold Limit Values : Nitric acid (U.S.A./A.C.G.I.H.) : TLV ( TWA ) : 2 ppm TLV ( STEL ) : 4 ppm
- Occupational exposure limit values (EU) : Nitric acid : Exposure limit (Short term) : 2.6 mg/m3 (1 ppm)
Personal protective equipment
- Respiratory protection : Keep the atmospheric concentration below the occupational exposure limits. If the occupational exposure limit is exceeded : If vapour is released: Self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Hand protection: Appropriate gloves. In case of mixture with other substances, request advice from your glove supplier. Protective gloves must be chosen according to the function of the work station: other chemicals which may be handled, physical protection necessary (resistance to cutting, puncture, heat), dexterity required. Use suitable chemical-resistant protective gloves (compliant with Standard EN 374-1)
- Eye protection : Safety spectacles and a face shield.
- Skin and body protection : Protective clothing. Acid-resistant clothing.
Hygiene measures : Wash as often as necessary.
Stability and reactivity
Stability : Stable under normal conditions of use.
Hazardous reactions :
- Materials to avoid : iron, metals
- Hazardous decomposition products : On combustion or on thermal decomposition (following the evaporation of water) releases:highly toxic gases.(Nitrogen oxides).
Disposal considerations
RESIDUES FROM PRODUCT
- Destruction/Disposal : Dispose of materials or solid residues at a licensed site.
CONTAMINATED PACKAGING
- Decontamination/cleaning : Clean with water.
- Destruction/Disposal : Entrust the thoroughly decontaminated packaging to a licensed waste-contractor.
NOTE : The user's attention is drawn to the possible existence of local regulations regarding disposal.
