Description of key information
Sodium hydrogensulfate has been tested in one in-vivo skin irritation and one in-vivo eye irritation study. The test for skin irritation properties shows a negative response, whereas the test on eye irritation indicates corrosive potential. Thus, sodium hydrogensulfate does not require classification as skin irritant, but has to be classified as irritant to the eye.

Skin irritation:
One key study for sodium hydrogensulfate according to OECD 404 is available which describes the test item as not irritating to the skin.
Based on the outcome of this study, sodium hydrogensulfate is considered as not irritating to the skin.
Eye irritation:
One in-vivo study for sodium hydrogensulfate according to OECD guideline 405 is available. This study conducted in one animal showed that sodium hydrogensulfate is a serious eye irritant.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Skin irritation:
Based on the results of the study performed in accordance with OECD 404, it can be concluded, that sodium hydrogensulfate is not irritating to the skin and has not to be classified according to the criteria specified by Directive 67/548/EEC and subsequent regulations and according to the EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations.
Eye irritation:
According to the criteria specified by Directive 67/548/EEC and subsequent regulations, the test item is classified as a serious eye irritant (Xi, R41)
According to the EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations, the test item is classified as Category 1.
