Details on results:
The preliminary estimate of the Log P = 5.749.

From the HPLC data, the partition coefficient is determined by first calculating the capacity factor k' according to:
k' = (tR - t0 / t0)
where:
k' = capacity factor
tR = HPLC retention time of the reference or test substance
t0 = dead time of column as measured by unretained compound thiourea

From the Pow reference solution data, k' was calculated for each reference substance and the values for log k' form both injections were plotted against log Pow values obtained from the test method as shown in Figure 1. In the reference solution chromatograms, the reference substance thymol eluted a barely visible shoulder on the toluene peak so thymol was not used in the calculations.

From the plotted data, the linear regression parameters were calculated as:
Slope = 0.2885
Intercept = -0.8753
Correlation Coefficient (R) = 0.996

From the data for the two injections of the Pow sample solution, the average value of k' was calculated and using the log of this average value of k' and the slope and the intercept of the calibration plot, the value of log Pow for the test substance was calculated as:
Log Pow = Log k' - intercept / slope
