Two studies are available investigating the short-term toxicity of tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8) towards six plant species.
In the available key study (2010a) on short-term toxicity of tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8), six different plant species (2 monocotyledonae and 4 dicotyledonae) were exposed to 3.2 kg a.i./ha Thiram technical for 21 d (4.23 mg/kg soil dw; recalculated based on application rate of 3.2 kg/ha and using a default depth of 5 cm and soil density of 1500 kg/m^3). The limit test was performed according to the OECD Guideline No. 208 (GLP). The test item was applied via spray application to the soil containing a defined number of seeds. Effects were observed for 21 d following 50% emergence in the control. Consideration of the seedling emergence, phytotoxicity, plant height and dry biomass data showed that only the seedling emergence of Glycine max (12.8 % reduction) and the plant heights of Zea mays (2.4 % reduction) were significantly reduced following exposure to Thiram technical at the maximum application dose of 3.2 kg a.s./ha. The other tested species (Beta vulgaris, Brassica napus, Solanum lycopersicum and Allium cepa) showed no or even positive effects on the observed parameters. Thus, for Glycine max and Zea mays EC50 (21 d) values of > 4.23 mg a.i./kg dw soil (nominal) were determined for the endpoints seedling emergence (12.8% reduction compared to control) and plant height (2.4% reduction compared to control), respectively. For all other endpoints and plant species no significant effects compared to the control groups were observed, resulting also in EC50 (21 d) values of >4.23 mg a.i./kg dw soil (nominal).
In the available supporting study (2010b) on short-term toxicity of tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8), six different plant species (2 monocotyledonae and 4 dicotyledonae) were exposed to 3.2 kg a.i./ha Thiram technical for 21 d (4.23 mg a.i./kg soil dw; recalculated based on the application rate of 3.2 kg/ha and using a default depth of 5 cm and soil density of 1500 kg/m^3). The limit test was performed according to the OECD Guideline No. 227 (GLP) and the test item was applied via spray application to young plants. Considering phytotoxic effects (13.3%), effects on plant height (16.4% significant difference) and dry biomass (26.5%, significant difference) Beta vulgaris showed the strongest effects compared to control upon the plant species tested for all three variables. For all species and endpoints, EC50 (21 d) values of > 4.23 mg a.i. /kg soil dw (nominal) were determined.
