Dictámenes aprobados y consultas previas sobre las solicitudes de autorización

This page provides further information on the applications for authorisation or review reports, which have undergone public consultation. The applications for authorisation are in the opinion development phase until the final opinions of the Committees for Risk Assessment and Socio-economic Analysis have been adopted and sent to the European Commission. The European Commission's decision-making process can be followed through the comitology register, where further information is published about the REACH Committee's past and upcoming meetings.

Use name
The use of chromium trioxide for electroplating of different types of substrates with the purpose to create a long-lasting high durability surface with bright (shiny) or matte look (Functional plating with decorative character)
Broad information on use applied for (conditions of use and function)
Hansgrohe SE uses chromium trioxide in the form of liquid chromic acid for the application of a functional chrome layer with decorative character on sanitary products by electroplating plastic and brass substrates. Chrome plating is carried out in two modular automated lines or in one manual plating unit. The three chrome plating lines are operated in Germany at two different sites. The chrome plating process is integrated into a complex electroplating process which in the manual process involves 10 steps and in the automated lines combines up to 30 successive treatments plus rinsing baths.

Sanitary items, once cleaned and degreased, are coated with sublayers in the same lines (including nickel and copper) before the chromium finish is applied. The final steps involve rinsing, drying and quality control. Substance function: The bright chrome surface layer as deposited on the brass and plastic parts exhibits a characteristic grain structure and thickness of less than 1 µm. Chromium has been chosen because it is ideal to protect parts and other coatings from corrosion. Both brass and plastic parts are used in the same sanitary installations for which a common bright chrome appearance is the industry standard.

The key advantages of Cr(VI) technology compared to its alternatives are both functional (corrosion protection, chemical resistance, good wear and abrasion properties, hardness, durability) as well as decorative (mirror-like surface with specific chrome colours). It also provides a high level of adhesion to the underlying base platings and allows treating objects with a complex geometry.
