Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Hexadecyl(trimethoxy)silane (CAS No. 16415-12-6) hydrolyses slowly under environmental conditions (DT50 > 14 d at pH 4-10). The resulting hydrolysis products are hexadecylsilanetriol and methanol.

Taking the hydrolysis half-time into account, the environmental hazard assessment for the aquatic compartment, including waste water treatment plant, is based on the properties of the parent substance in accordance with REACH guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment R.16 (ECHA, 2016).

Hexadecyl(trimethoxy)silane is readily biodegradable but failed the 10-day window (biodegradation of 65% and 81% after 28 and 60 d, respectively). The parent substance and its silanol hydrolysis product exhibit low volatility. Therefore, indirect photodegradation is not an important degradation pathway. The parent substance has low volatility (1E-04 Pa at 20°C) and is barely water-soluble (2.0E-03 mg/L at 20°C). However, it has a high adsorption potential (calculated log Koc between 5.23 and 7.03). Therefore, it is expected to sorb to soil and sediment particles as well as to sewage sludge.
