Description of key information

2,2'-azobis(2,4 -dimethylvaleronitrile) is an unstable substance unstable to hydrolysis, photolysis and thermolysis due to its azo group. Because of this instablility the substance is used as radical initiator in polymerization reactions.

The available data according to OECD 111 Tier 1 show that no substance is found after 120 h at 50 °C. This is in line with company data showing a half-life of 10 hours at 50 °C. Different potential transformation products from the hydrolysis are identified using the QSAR Toolbox v4.2 simulation. Additionally, the substance undergoes thermal transformation. According to company data the transformation products 2,4 -dimethylpentanenitrile (CAS# 69975 -94 -6) (7 %), 4 -methyl-2 -methylenepentanenitrile (7 %) and 2,3 -diisobutyl-2,3 -dimethylsuccinonitrile (CAS# 80822 -82 -8) (85 %) are formed during the reaction.
