Since no studies investigating the acute toxicity on daphnids of fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 85186-92-1) are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 read across to structurally related category members was conducted. The read-across substances are representative to evaluate the toxicity on daphnids since they have a similar structure and thus cover the target substance adequately. A detailed justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.

A study investigating the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of 2-ethyl-2-[[(1-oxooleyl)oxy]methyl]-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS 57675-44-2) was selected for read across. In this static study with Daphnia magna according to OECD 202 the test solution was prepared with Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF). Häner (2006) determined an EL0 (48 h) ≥ 100 mg/L and EL50 (48 h) > 100 mg/L, far in excess of water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L)

The acute toxicity of the read across substance Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-78-8) to aquatic invertebrates was tested in a study following OECD guideline 202 (Bouillon, 2012). Daphnia magna were exposed to the test substance in a static test system for 48 hours. The test was performed as a limit test with a loading ratio of 0.106 g (substance)/1000 g (test medium). An EL50 >106 mg/L based on the nominal concentration of the water accommodated fraction of the test substance was reported. Therefore acute toxic effects on aquatic invertebrates are not expected within the range of the water solubility of the substance (<0.05 mg/L; Frischmann, 2012).

Thelast study chosen for read across examined the short-term toxicity of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS 42222-50-4) to aquatic invertebrates. The study was performed as a limit test according to OECD Guideline 202 (Häner, 2006). Daphnia magna was exposed to nominal test concentration of 100 mg/L in a static system for 48 hours. No significant immobilisation was observed, and the LC50 was reported to be > 100 mg/L.

Based on the results of the read across substances, it can be concluded that fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18unsatd. (even numbered), mono-, diesters with neopentyl glycol and di-, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 85186-92-1) is not toxic to aquatic invertebrates up to water solubility.
