Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Test procedure in accordance with generally accepted scientific standards and described in sufficient detail
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN N.1
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
wetted zone stops propagation of the flame for at least 4 minutes

2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate in its delivery state was measured.

2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate melted when approached by the ignition flame, but did not burn up. No further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Based on the burning behaviour of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate a study according to UN N.1 was not necessary. The substance is a not flammable solid.
Executive summary:

Based on the burning behaviour of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate a study according to UN N.1 was not necessary. 2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is a non-flammable solid.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

a) Flammability:
2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is a non-flammable solid.
b) Flammability on contact with water:
Testing for flammability on contact with water does not need to be conducted as 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate contains no metals or metalloids and therefore will not release flammable gases in contact with water.
c) Pyrophoric properties:
Testing for pyrophoric properties does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. Experience in the performance of other tests show that 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate does not ignite spontaneously on coming in contact with air at normal temperatures (i.e. 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is known to be stable at room temperature for prolonged periods of time).
d) Contact with water:
Testing for pyrophoric properties does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. 2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate contains no metals or metalloids and therefore will not release flammable gases in contact with water.
e) Self-heating properties:
Testing is scientifically unjustified because the melting point with 46.5 °C is below the required temperature investigations.
f) Self-reacting properties:
Based on the heat of decomposition (ΔH= -13 kJ/kg) and onset-temperature (215 °C) it is expected that SADT is > 75 °C. Therefore, it can be concluded that 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is not self-reactive in the sense of CLP Annex I, 2.8. The determination according to UN-RTDG Procedure H.4 (SADT) is not necessary.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Flammability:

Based on the burning behaviour testing according UN N.1 was not necessary.

Pyrophoric Properties:

Experience in production or handling: 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is known to be stable at room temperature.

Contact with water:

2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate contains no metals or metalloids and therefore will not release flammable gases in contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is not classified in the Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC. According to the information summarised below, no classification on flammability is needed:

- Based on the burning behaviour testing according to UN N.1 was not necessary.

- No pyrophoric property, based on experience from production and handling;

2,2-Dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate does not ignite spontaneously with water and does not liberate flammable gases in hazardous amounts in contact with water. Based on the data summarised above, 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl dibenzoate is also not flammable according to GHS (Regulation EC 1272/2008).
