PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

UnoxolTM 3,4 -dialdehyde is not PBT/vPvB. UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde is soluble in water, it has a low octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow of 0.9, measured) and a low adsorption coefficient (Log Koc of 1.02 to 1.22, measured). When UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde is introduced into the environment, it will stay in aqueous phase due to its low sorption potential. UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde is readily biodegradable and is expected to be rapidly biodegradable in various environmental media such wastewater treatment plant, soil, and water. UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde is not expected to bioaccumulate in the food chain due to its low octanol-water partition coefficient. Acute toxicity test with UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde indicated that acute toxicity for this compound with fish, invertebrates, and algae was 26 mg/L, 89 mg/L, and 17 mg/L, respectively. Additionally, the No Observable Adverse Effect Concentration for Unoxol 3,4 -Dialdehyde in an algal growth inhibition assay with Selenastrum capricornutum (now Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) was 1.7 mg/L. Based on this toxicity data, UNOXOL(TM) 3,4 Dialdehyde is considered not toxic (T) according to screening level criteria.
