The animals were exposed to MMA on 12 cm2 of proximal tail skin 1 cm distal to the anus.

Details on results:
Keratolysis without ulceration of the exposed skin and a decrease of primary muscle response to stimulation of the rat tail motor nerve was observed after 4 weeks of exposure. The thickness of the  myelinated nerve was not significantly affected. On electron microscopic examination myelin figures were found in less  than 10 % of the axons in the upper dermis. In the epidermis enlarged intracelluar spaces and abnormal keratinocytes were found.
