Description of key information

Half-lives between 16 and 377 days have been determined for main constituents of AOH. A value in the upper part of this range is considered to represent best the overall biodegradation of AOH in soil.

Biodegradation in soil of the substance distillates (coal tar), heavy oils (anthracene oil >50 ppm BaP, AOH), will best be characterised by half-lives determined for individual constituents of the substance. Main components are 3-ring and 4-ring PAH (phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene and pyrene, see Chapter 1.2). For these substances, half-lives have been determined to be between 16 and 377 days (see table above). Results for three ring PAH indicate half-lives predominantly below 120 days while half-lives of 4-ring PAH have been determined to be above 180 days.

Half-lives for 4-ring PAH reported in the Park study imply some uncertainty as duration of the test was only 196 and 105 days for soil #1 and #2 respectively.
