Sulphamidic acid has been investigated for terrestrial toxicity in three different test systems:

  • OECD Guideline 222 (Earthworm Reproduction Test (Eisenia fetida/Eisenia andrei)),
  • DIN EN ISO 22030 (Terrestrial plants growth & fertility test for chronic toxicity in higher plants), and
  • OECD Guideline 216 (Soil Microorganisms: Nitrogen Transformation Test)

The tests were performed following approval by ECHA to conduct the tests.

The results were as follows:

  • Earthworm reproduction test: 28d-LC50 (mortality) >1000mg/kg dry soil, 56d-EC10 (reproduction) = 290 mg/kg dry soil, and 56d-EC50 (reproduction) = 560 mg/kg dry soil
  • Higher plant chronic test: Sulphamidic acid had a chronic inhibitory effect on emergence and post-emergence survival in Brassica rapa, and on growth in Avena sativa (NOEC of 50 mg/kg soil dw). With respect to fertility, there was no inhibitory effect in the two tested plant species due to the test item (NOEC of 100 mg/kg soil dw).
  • Results of OECD 216 study on nitrogen transformation: 28d NOEC = 100 mg/kg dw and 28d-EC50 = 162 mg/kg dw.

Thus, sulphamidic acid is of low toxicity towards terrestrial plants and the decreasing pH with increasing test concentration may play an effect in the toxicity seen (test systems were not artificially buffered or neutralized).
