Description of key information

The acute toxicity of TBBPA has been investigated in 5 species of fish. The 96 h LC50 values range from 0.4 to 1.1 mg/L. The 96 h LC50 of 1.1 mg/L was selected for PNEC derivation based on the quality of the study and the analytical methods.

Additional information

The short term toxicity of TBBPA to fish was investigated in 5 studies. Two of these were deemed to be unreliable. The three key studies were as follows:

1) Surprenant (1988): 6 day study in Pimephales promelas under flow-through conditions at nominal concentrations of 0.18, 0.27, 0.42, 0. 63, and 1.0 mg/L (measured concentrations 0.19, 0.26, 0.32, 0.45, and 0.63 mg/L). The calculated LC50 value at the 96-hour interval was 0.54 (0.45 - 0.63) mg/L TBBPA. A 48-hour LC50 for this study could not be established; therefore it was decided to continue the exposure beyond 96 hours. At test termination, 100 and 30% mortality was observed in the two highest treatment levels. The No Observed Effect Concentration (144 hours) for fathead minnows exposed to TBBPA was determined to be 0.26 mg/L.

2) Blankinship et al. (2003): 96 hr study in Oncorhynchus mykiss under flow-through conditions at nominal concentrations of 1.2 and 1.8 mg/L TBBPA (measured concentrations 1.1 and 1.7 mg/L). The 96-hour LC50 value was 1.1 mg/L. The 96-hour no mortality concentration and the NOEC were both < 1.1 mg TBBPA/L. Percent mortality at test termination in the 1.1 and 1.7 mg TBBPA/L treatment groups was 45 and 100%, respectively.

3) Bogers (1998): 96 hr study in Cyprinus carpio under static conditions at nominal concentrations of 0.42, 0.65, and 1.0 mg TBBPA/L. TBBPA did not induce mortality in carp at the nominal concentration of 0.42 mg/L. The 96-hour LC50 (reached after 72 hours of exposure) was 0.71 mg/L.
