Description of key information

Sodium chlorate is not expected to adsorb onto soil based on its low log Kow and the findings in the soil leaching study where almost no sodium chlorate was found in the soil horizons.

Based on the low log Kow (< -2.9) sodium chlorate is not expected to adsorb onto soil. The soil leaching study performed by Thomas, et al. (2004) supports this. In this study 103.86% of applied dose was found in the leachate in four German standard soils, and with 79.84% of applied dose found in a field soil; the lower level of chlorate found in the leachate being explain by degradation. Under extended leaching experiment (application of 10.5mm of water every 1.6 days, starting 24h after application), low levels of chlorate were detected in the leachate collected each day (max. 7.6% of applied dose). Total recovered chlorate in the leachate ranged from 0.4 to 41.7% of applied dose. These low levels are attributed to degradation of chlorate in the column. In both experiment, almost no chlorate was detected (<0.8% of applied dose) in the soil horizons.
