The apparatus is designed to determine the melting points of single or mixed solids with recommended maximum melting point of up to 350°C.

It is possible to use the apparatus to determine melting points to a temperature of 450°C although accuracy is impaired. Resolution: 0.1 °C of accuracy, ± 1°C at 350°C.

A heater block is monitored by a type "K" thermocouple linked to an advanced solid state temperature measuring circuit.

Capillary tubes are used. The test item is crunched before use if necessary. Capillary tubes containing the test item are inserted into the heating block.

The rate of heating is 1°C to 2°C per minute until the melting point is observed. The test is performed three times.

The melting point or the melting range of temperatures indicated in this report is the mean of the three assays.

As the difference in temperature between the start and the end of melting is out off the limits of accuracy of the method, a melting range is reported.

Conclusions:
