Two reliable proprietary studies for 2-methylbut-2-ene show the substance is not readily biodegradable, with 0% to 7% biodegradation observed after 28 days in OECD guideline studies. However, the substance is not expected to persist in the aquatic environment as it volatilises rapidly from water, with a half-life in rivers of 51 minutes and in lakes of 3.3 days. Once in the atmosphere, it would undergo rapid photo-oxidation, with a half-life of approximately 5.6 hours.

Structural analysis indicates that the substance is not expected to undergo hydrolysis due to the lack of hydrolysable functional groups. Based on a log Kow of 2.67 the substance is not expected to bioaccumulate in the environment or absorb strongly to soil or sediment. Accordingly, the endpoints BCF and Koc can be waived.
