Description of key information

Based on a weight of evidence assessment the auto flammability temperature for 2-methylbut-2-ene is 275ºC.

In the absence of a reliable key study, a weight of evidence assessment was used to determine this endpoint. Two studies Lide (2008) and Lewis (2007) were used. The Lide (2008) study concerns pent-1-ene and is taken from a peer-reviewed handbook and is considered to be reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint. The Lewis (2007) study concerns isoamylene. No information on the primary source of this data or the methods used is available. However, this information is taken from a published handbook and so can be considered suitable for use as weight of evidence for this endpoint.

The values for pent-1-ene and isoamylene are considered suitable for read-across to 2-methylbut-2-ene, based on analogues structural consideration. In addition the boiling point and flash point for pent-1-ene are very similar to the values for 2-methylbut-2-ene, which further supports the suitability for read-across. Isoamylene (2-methylbutene, CAS 26760-64-5) is a mixture of two isomers, 2-methylbut-2-ene (CAS 513-35-9) and 2-methylbut-1-ene (CAS 563-46-2) and therefore read across between isoamylene and its constituent isomers is considered a suitable.

The auto flammability temperature of both pent-1 -ene and isoamylene (2-methylbutene, CAS 26760-64-5) is 275ºC. Therefore, based on a weight of evidence assessment, the auto-flammability temperature of 2 -methylbut-2 -ene is 275°C.
