Description of key information

The substance was not acutely toxic to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) at a concentration of 95.4 mg/L over a period of 48 hours. An EC50 value could not be established (EC50 > 95.4 mg/L).

The acute toxicity of 4-phenylbutan-2-one to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was tested over a period of 48 hours in a static system as limit test in accordance with OECD guideline No. 202 and under GLP conditions. The test solutions at a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L were prepared by dissolving the test substance with the help of a stirrer in M4-medium, which was prepared according to Elendt (1992). The nominal concentration was confirmed by measuring the TOC content at the beginning of the test and after 48 hours. The measured TOC revealed an arithmetic mean concentration of test substance of 95.4 mg/L. The EC0 and EC50 values were determined directly from the study results. The EC0 based on immobilisation of test animals by the test material (arithmetic mean of analytical values) after 48 hours was greater than or equal to 95.4 mg/L.
