For the treated groups with nominal PBO concentrations of0.13, 0.22, 0.36, 0.6 and 1.0 ppmthe mean measured concentrations of radioactivity were 0.08, 0.15, 0.25, 0.4 and 0.74 ppm, respectively. In the solvent control group all animals appeared healthy and normal throughout the test. Signs of abnormal behaviour among daphnia exposed to PBO at 0.40 and 0.74 ppm were observed after 48 hours. At these concentrations all of the organisms were discoloured and some organisms started to be lethargic.

No organisms died or were immobile at PBO concentration levels of 0.08 and 0.15 ppm. After 48 h one daphnid was dead in the treated group exposed to 0.25 ppm. At concentration levels of 0.40 ppm 30 % of the daphnia were immobile after 48 h. At a concenrtration level of 0.74 ppm, 50 % of the daphnids were immobile and 30 % were dead at the end of the test.

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The results of this study demonstrated a no mortality/immobilisation concentration of PBO for daphnia of 0.15 ppm (150µg/L) and an EC50 value of 0.51 ppm (510 µg/L) after 48 h exposure.
Based on the results of this study (see below) Piperonyl Butoxide would be classified as very highly toxic to Daphnia magna.

Description of key information

The results of this study demonstrated a no mortality/immobilisation concentration of PBO for daphnia of 0.15 ppm (150µg/L) and an EC50 value of 0.51 ppm (510 µg/L) after 48 h exposure.
