Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

The toxicity of tert-dodecanethiol on green algae was tested according to OECD TG 201 using water accommodated fractions. Very few effects were observed with the series of concentrations between 0.3 and 100 mg/L WAFs. It was not possible to determine an EL50 or NOEC. As a weight of evidence approach based on the available information, the substance does not appear to be toxic to algae at or below the solubility limit.

The algal toxicity of tert-dodecanethiol was tested on green algae according to OECD TG 201. Due to poor solubility, composition (numerous isomers) and volatility of the substance, the study was carried out using water accommodated fractions, closed flasks together with a medium enriched in carbonates. Very few effects were observed with the series of concentrations between 0.3 and 100 mg/L WAFs. It was not possible to determine an EL50. Only a NOELR (growth rate) could be derived at 3.2 mg/L (nominal loading rate). However, as the flasks were opened at regular intervals throughout the study this test cannot be considered as valid. In this study, an EC50 of >100 mg/L was determined. This data was reviewed by Thomas & Comber (2013). As too little information was available on this study a Study Summary was not included in the IUCLID but publication is included in the attached document.


Taken as a weight of evidence approach based on the available information the substance does not appear to be toxic to algae at or below the solubility limit.


 


For this reason further attempts to perform studies on algae have been abandoned and the study is considered as waived on the basis of technical issues.
