Description of key information

The main use of the tert-butyl acrylate monomer is to form homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers of tert-butyl acrylate can be prepared with acrylic acid and its salts, amides and esters, and with methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils, etc. Tert-butyl acrylate is also a feedstock for chemical synthesis, it readily undergoes addition reactions with a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds. Tert-butyl acrylateis handled primarily, if not exclusively, in closed systems. This use of tert-butyl acrylate as a monomer for the production of copolymers in closed systems indicates that environmental exposure would be limited. The volatility of tert-butyl acrylate provides for volatilization of any releases to the air. Tert-butyl acrylate is slowly photodegradable and moderately biodegradable, and accidental releases to the environment would not result in accumulation or persistence. The relatively high water solubility and corresponding low log Kow indicate that no bioaccumulation potential exists.

Acute effect levels were in the same range of concentrations for all three trophic levels, i.e. between 1 and 10 mg/L. In order to assess long-term toxicity towards aquatic organisms, a 21-day chronic life-cycle study with Daphnia magna was conducted with the structural analogue n-butyl acrylate by BASF SE (2009).
