First-aid measures

General:

First aider needs to protect himself. Take off all contaminated clothing immediately. Medical treatment is necessary if symptoms occur which are obviously caused by skin or eye contact with the product or by inhalation of its vapours.

4.1 Description of first aid measures

Inhalation:

Move subject to fresh air and keep him calm. Call a physician immediately.

Skin Contact:

In case of contact with the skin wash off immediately with plenty of water. Call a physician immediately.

Eye contact:

Keeping the eyelids apart flush thoroughly with water immediately. Protect unharmed eye. Call ambulance. (Cue: caustic burn of the eyes) Continue rinsing eye until arrival at ophthalmic hospital.

Ingestion:

Rinse out mouth and give plenty of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately.

4.2 Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:

Acute dermal irritation/corrosion Acute eye irritation/corrosion burning in mouth and throat Coughing. Difficulty in breathing. Risk of serious damage to eyes.

4.3 Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Hazards:

No data available.

Treatment:

Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

5.1 Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media:

foam Dry chemical. Carbon dioxide

Unsuitable extinguishing media:

High volume water jet

5.2 Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

May be released in case of fire: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, organic products of decomposition.

5.3 Advice for firefighters

Special fire fighting procedures:

Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. No smoking. Take action to prevent static discharges. In the event of fire, cool the endangered containers with water. When heated above the flash point and/or during spraying (atomizing), ignitible mixtures may form in air.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Assure sufficient ventilation. Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection. Keep away sources of ignition. Use breathing apparatus if exposed to vapours/dust/mist/aerosol. Do not breathe vapours or spray mist. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

6.1.1 For non-emergency personnel:

No data available.

6.1.2 For emergency responders:

No data available.

6.2 Environmental Precautions:

Avoid release to the environment. Prevent product from getting into drains/surface water/groundwater.

6.3 Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Larger quantities: Remove mechanically (by pumping). Use explosion-proof equipment! Smaller quantities and/or residues: Contain with absorbent material (e.g. sand, diatomaceous earth, acid absorbent, universal absorbent or sawdust). Dispose of in accordance with regulations.

6.4 Reference to other sections:

For personal protection see section 8. For disposal considerations see section 13.

Handling and storage

7.1 Precautions for safe handling:

Do not breathe vapors. Absolutely avoid contact with the eyes and/or skin. Safety shower and eye wash fountain should be available. Do not eat, drink or smoke during use. Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. No smoking. Take action to prevent static discharges. In the event of fire, cool the endangered containers with water. When heated above the flash point and/or during spraying (atomizing), ignitible mixtures may form in air. Keep container tightly closed. Provide good room ventilation even at ground level (vapours are heavier than air). Methacrylic acid freezes at 15°C (59°F). Improper thawing can result in violent polymerization. The thawing of frozen drums can best be accomplished by placing them in a heated room at temperatures up to 40°C (104°F). This will allow the acid to melt slowly within a 48-hour period. DO NOT remove any material if stock is frozen or partially frozen. Mix during and after thawing to properly distribute inhibitor. NEVER use steam or electric heating bands.

7.2 Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Fill the container by approximately 90 % only as oxygen (air) is required for stabilisation. With large storage containers make sure the oxygen (air) supply is sufficient to ensure stability.Maintain the temperature of the methacrylic acid between 18°C and approx. 35°C.Protect from light. The ideal storage temperature is 20-25°C.Can polymerize with intense heat release.Higher temperature such as 40° C can be safely tolerated for short times such as during tranportation or inventory turnover.

7.3 Specific end use(s):

We are unaware of any specific end uses which go beyond the data reported in Section 1.

Additional Information: Please observe the instructions regarding permeability and breakthrough time which are provided by the supplier of the gloves. Also take into consideration the specific local conditions under which the product is used, such as the danger of cuts, abrasion, and the contact time., The above mentioned hand protection is based on special knowledge of the chemical and the intended handling of this product, however, it still may not be suited for all workplaces. A qualified hazard assessment should be made prior to the onset of work in order to determine the suitability of gloves for specific working environments and processes., Gloves should be discarded and replaced if there is any indication of degradation or chemical breakthrough.

Skin and Body Protection:

On handling of larger quantities: face mask, chemical-resistant boots and apron

Respiratory Protection:

Breathing apparatus in case of high concentrations short-term: filter appliance, combination filter ABEK

Hygiene measures:

Store work clothing separately. Take off all contaminated clothing immediately. Follow the usual good standards of occupational hygiene. Clean skin thoroughly after work; apply skin cream.

Environmental Controls:

Disposal considerations

13.1 Waste treatment methods

General information:

Dispose of waste and residues in accordance with local authority requirements.

Disposal methods:

Waste is hazardous. It must be disposed of in accordance with the regulations after consultation of the competent local authorities and the disposal company in a suitable and licensed facility. Strictly controlled conditions during disposal or treatment to air, wastewater and waste. Do not add wastewater to a biological wastewater treatment plant Bring wastewater containing AOX for professional disposal. The waste key number must be determined as per the European Waste Types List (decision on EU Waste Types List 2000/532/EC) in cooperation with the disposal firm / producing firm / official authority.

Contaminated Packaging:

Contaminated packaging should ideally be emptied; it can then be recycled after having been decontaminated. Packaging that cannot be cleaned should be disposed of professionally. Uncontaminated packaging may be taken for recycling.
