Executive summary:

The effective concentrations (ErC10, ErC20, ErC50 and EyC10, EyC20, EyC50) as well as the no observed effect concentrations (NOErC and NOEyC), PAC-Ethenenitrile (CAS no. 1219086-87-9) to the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus, were investigated over a period of 72 h, based on the average specific growth rate and the yield (algal biomass production). The test item PAC-Ethenenitrile is solid, pure and not poorly soluble. Consequently the test medium was prepared by adding the respective amount of test item to empty glass vessels, followed by addition of the Algal medium, overnight stirring and filtration. The single investigated loading rate was 100 mg/l. Six replicate test vessels were used for the test concentration, and six for the blank controls. The concentrations of PAC-Ethenenitrile in the test medium were measured by HPLC analysis at the beginning and after 24, 48 h and 72 h of exposure. These analyses confirmed that the test item is poorly soluble (all measurements below the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.02 mg/l). Additional- ly, DOC analysis of the test concentration was performed in the test solution at the beginning of the test. These analyses confirmed the results of the HPLC analysis (all measurements were below the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.5 mg/l). No significant effects were observed at 100 mg/l loading rate as compared to the blank controls, neither based on the growth rate, nor based on the yield. Therefore, the ErC10, ErC20, ErC50 and EyC10, EyC20, EyC50 values of PAC-Ethenenitrile on the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus were all estimated to be >100 mg/l loading rate, or >0.02 mg/l measured concentration. The NOErC and NOEyC values are both 100 mg/l loading rate, or 0.02 mg/l measured concentration. All validity criteria were fulfilled.
